At the age of 17, he began his career in the music industry under the stage name César Roel, singing and playing guitar with the rock-and-roll group Los Black Jeans ("The Black Jeans"). He performed Spanish adaptations of American hit songs and as original compositions such as "La batalla de Jericó." Peerless Records was the label that helped them make their first album in 1959.Plácido Domingo, a tenor of international repute, served as his backing vocalist. After securing a record deal with Musart Records, the group renamed itself Los Camisas Negras, which translates to "The Black Shirts," and César Roel was renamed Cesar Costa in honour of music arranger Don Costa. The group broke up not long after that, and César went on to have a fruitful solo career, releasing three albums for Orfeón Records. Following that, he recorded love songs with RCA Mexicana. He took part in the OTI Festival in 1983, and won second spot with a single named Tierno (""Tender"") by Sergio Andrade.
As a result of his achievements in the music world, he was invited to perform with other singers in movies produced by the Mexican Cinema, including Angélica María, Enrique Guzmán and Alberto Vázquez. Juventud Rebelde was the first movie he directed in 1961.
