First gaining recognition for his work on television, he played the character of William H. Bonney (Billy the Kid) between the years 1960 to 1962 on the NBC television show The Tall Man and the role of Emmett Ryker in the NBC Western TV show The Virginian. He then went on to have a second acting career, this time in horror movies, one of his most notable roles being the protagonist in Dan O'Bannon's The Return of the Living Dead in 1985.In addition to that, he appeared in A Nightmare on Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge in 1985. At the age of 80, he began appearing in the horror movies directed by his son, including the Feasts flicks and Piranha 3DD in 2005.
