She was a member of the board of directors for the Stringtown Public School Foundation and she was a member of the rodeo group known as H.AN.D.S. (Helping A Needy Diva Survive). At a young age, McEntire got her initial taste of stardom when she joined her students and instructors in singing "The Star Spangled Banner" at school assemblies. Because her parents did not have the additional funds necessary for her to explore a career in singing, she obtained her teaching certificate from the state of Oklahoma. She then began riding her horse to the Tipperary School each morning to teach first through eight grade students.
Jackie decided to put her schooling on hold in order to assist with the development of the family ranch. She started working with the guys on the ranch, preparing dinner for everyone, taking care of the children, and then starting the cycle once again the following day.In addition, she proved to be an invaluable asset to the rodeo career of her husband and also her children's growing career paths.
In 1962, McEntire went back to work in the educational field, this time as the librarian and secretary at Kiowa High School. She did this while still taking care of her kids and their needs. She was liable for the school board's consent of the Kiowa Cowboy Band, whilst working with Clark Rhyne. The band held school benefit concerts, played at football games, and was responsible for fostering the careers of prospective musical superstars like Dianna Kay Smith, Kelly Rhyne, Carol Johnston, Roger Wills (Alan Jackson's bass player and bandleader), Gary Raiburn, and her own children, Susie, Pake, and Reba McEntire.
