After that, he moved to Ohio to present his own television program, which was titled The Nick Clooney Show. He did so initially in Columbus, Ohio, for WLWC television in 1968, later for Cincinnati's WCPO-TV in 1969, and eventually, with the most success, for crosstown rival WKRC-TV in the early 1970s. The Nick Clooney Show was a local talk and variety show that aired in the morning. It was on the daytime game program The Money Maze that he first became popular on a national scale, which aired on ABC in December of 1974. The Money Maze was originally scheduled to air on ABC at 4 p.m., but WKRC-TV, which was an ABC affiliate at the time, decided to postpone the show so that it could go back-to-back with The Nick Clooney Show at 10:30 and 11 a.m., respectively.
On July 4, 1975, ABC decided to end its run of The Money Maze, which led to Clooney's return to WKRC-TV, where he eventually became the news director and primary anchor for the station. As a reporter, he is most likely most recognized for his reporting of the fire that occurred at the Beverly Hills Supper Club in 1977 and the events that transpired in the years that followed it.

AI Schottelkotte had been in charge of WCPO-TV throughout that time. In 1984, after quitting WKRC, he went on to work for KNBC in Los Angeles, California, where he served as a co-anchor for the 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. news shows. In the late 1980s, he was once again seen working at WKRC-TV.
