Carney was one of the original members of the band Tin Huey, which is where he began his career as a professional musician. Carney has worked with Tin Huey in the 1970s and Tom Waits since the 1980s. Carney has even recorded or performed with artists such as Dieselhed, the B-52's, Bill Laswell, Marc Ribot, Elvis Costello, Jonathan Richman, St. Vincent, Stan Ridgway, Les Claypool, Medeski Martin & Wood, Jed Davis, Griddle, and HowellDevine, among many others. Carney was one of the core members of the Swollen Monkeys in 1981, alongside Mars Williams, who later joined the Psychedelic Furs. That same year, the band put out an album titled "Afterbirth of the Cool," which was produced by Hal Willner. In addition to launching a number of solo albums, Carney was a part of the Oranj Symphonette alongside fellow Waits veterans Joe Gore and Matt Brubeck. He was the leader of the San Francisco band Carneyball Johnson, in which he played saxophones, Turkish clarinet, trumpet, piccolo, percussion, and vocals.
